Lyrics are like gateways

Okay I've just been listening to more of Keaton Hensons music and I don't think I've ever heard someone so heartbroken and actually destroyed as him. His lyrics are gorgeous the website is wonderful and the fact he doesn't like to perform and keeps himself to himself is wonderful. Perhaps a bit of a Nick Drake emerging here? Such heartfelt emotional lyrics from someone so young are quite upsetting to hear. He is obviously an extrememly emotional person who can convey this in a magical way to everyone. It doesn't even sound like he is moaning and pining after her, especially not in Party Song which adds a dark disturbing twist to the otherwise beautiful love songs.

I like how on his website it says
"Dear Unknown,
I hope you listen as though it were all for you

I hope she knows it was.

I hope you can forget that I do both

It meant more before.

The Author."

That is literally what songs are to me; gateways that go both ways. The writer releases their feelings on the world and the receiver interprets the lyrics in a way that helps them. Anyway I hope very much to see this young man live at some point he is extremely talented and enjoyable to listen to.

Do you notice when you're sad?

I've been useless I know and I don't know why I'm posting this now as I have no new songs to post. I'm thinking about people I've been listening to recently and I can't think of anyone. God damn you Christmas, you've killed my brain.

Here goes, I don't even remember if I've posted this before but hey ho.

Keaton Henson-(Any of his songs but for this post) You Don't know how lucky you are
Most of this song could have been written for/about me. I hate physical contact:

"You don't like to be touched,
Let alone kissed"

I do feel so misunderstood sometimes, by myself and everyone else, and these lyrics reassure me that I'm not alone:

"Do you know who you are?
Do you laugh just to know what you lack?"

And this final line is intriguing. The whole song he seems to have been hinting that she is with the wrong man yet at the end he says
"D0es his love make you head spin?" suggesting it does and that they are right for each other. Strange.

He also has a fabulous beard rivaling Mr McMorrows. I saw a link about him on twitter then a from My Bands Better Than Your Bands blog I was reminded of his fragile voice and intriguing lyrics.

Are you leaving me? Can you let me know?

Dan Wilde-Be Gone

Wow only 98 views. What a privilege. Mr Wilde has such a soft sound to his voice and I love it, it's so sweet yet not at all sickly; it's comforting and the twangy guitar compliments his smooth tones perfectly. The marriage of the lyrics and music is wonderful, it's a kind of longing and wanting that evokes sympathy from the listener. It's a very emotional song and you can sense he has been left alone in his voice.

I love the feeling when we lift off, watching the world so small below

White lies- Death
I never noticed the connection between the band and the song before but that's interesting. Hmmm anyway here is the song and it is glorious. They were also wonderful live even though I only saw a snippet of their set before rushing to Jared Leto (aka a beautiful human being who put on an incredible performance).
Wow two years old already. And they've peaked in popularity now.
ahh here is the original. Much better than all the remixs. His voice is strangely wonderful and I don't quite know why. He sounds almost out of time in places. Gives it a wonderful disjointed feeling.
Pretty sound lyrics too. I also like the fast drum beats, gives it a bit of life.

"Fears got a hold on me." This features in another song I think it's a Ben Howard one I shall elaborate tomorrow as I have shit loads of stuff to do.

Drunk as ya get you know you're better than this

The Original Rudeboys-Live your life

I can't remember if I've posted these guys music before but they are truly wonderful. They're accents are to die for and their music isn't half bad either. I like the hap hazard feel it has, you can see they're just friends who have stumbled across music as something they all enjoy. I saw them at Reading on the introducing stage and when I saw they were announced I was so pleased, one of the smallest acts yet coming from Ireland I wasn't sure I'd ever see them.
Anyway I'm glad I did as they're pretty sick live and I got in one of their crowd pictures yay. Ed Sheeran retweeted one of their mates who asked if he could tweet a link to their song and I'm so glad he did. I like the mix of rap and melody they have, it's interesting and I'll admit doesn't work in places but is genius in others!
Jesus it had 300 views last time I played it!
Stars in your eyes is pretty nice too but this is my favourite.

Go easy on me

The Vaccines-Wetsuit

God I miss the summer. I love this band very much and I miss the careless feeling of summer. Festival mania will grasp me this coming summer as I will have money from my job (yes job!) and will be able to go to loads. My car is also going to help massively; it is my freedom! I need to get back to the sea soon; I'm getting withdrawal symptoms. I will buy a caravan by the beach and live there with a wetsuit and surfboard to keep me company. Fuck you all. I really can't be dealing with people at the moment; personalities and opinions annoy me. Only the people who disagree with each other just to cause trouble.

I am a miserable sod but right now I don't care. I'll be over it tomorrow. At least I hope I will be, I have a full day of lessons.

I like this video too, it's very clever.

Is this the end of the road?

Danny and the champions of the world-Henry the van

I love this song. Frank Turner played it on his hour take over on BBC radio 6? It's an interesting song about the bands van breaking down. If you actually listen it's clearly about more than that.
It's got a very country sound and is certainly not to everyone's taste but there's something very soothing and human about it. The lack of electronic edits and sounds makes it perhaps easier to relate to: more earthly.

It hides in your eyes, in a picture. In another places sky.

Benjamin Francis Leftwich- More than letters

Heard this on last fm in April and couldn't find it on youtube until now. It's probably my favourite song of his. Even if his voice could be described as weak I don't believe it is, I see it as sensitive and emotional. It's interesting as well, the way in which he conveys such softness in his voice. The lyrics have got to be some of the most adorable ones I've ever read, his girlfriend must be a pretty inspirational person!

The things that keep me alive, keep me alone

What a beautiful paradox.

Fink-This is the thing

Need I say more? Other than that no I didn't watch Dear John to find this music but I'm so, so glad they used it.

Every time your back was turned, I'd put a finger in the air

and every time you turned around, I'd hide it cos I know it hurts

Wave Machines-Punk Spirit

These guys have seriously grown on me. Their music just doesn't get old. I could listen to it forever, they're just gloriously clever and create meaningful, interesting music. It's not churned out pop it's good rocky pop with a bit of a bite to it. Nothing too harsh now. He sounds like he is genuinely in pain when singing this song, not physical pain but emotional; like there's no point in life any more. His singing is not varied but this is more than made up for by the lyrics, tune and wa oh oh oo dotted in the song. I simply adore Wave Machines and next opportunity to see them live I am grabbing with both hands! The video is pretty snazzy too, it's refreshing.
Green Man 2009, yeah baby

What your percieve as life is no more than a chore

Pretty swift one today

Tom Vek-A Chore
I like this song. The fact he is a self taught instrumentalist is also pretty impressive. I like the unpolished roughness to his voice, it works nicely with the depressing, reality inducing lyrics.

I got the inspiration from a post by one of my friends, else there wouldn't have been one today. I'm too tired.

Friday, 11 November 2011

Wild, raaaarrr

I have done this one before but here it is again

But for today hmmm I am at a loss, actually I know exactly who I'm picking. Maybe even two.

Wild Beasts- Hooting and Howling

I have a feeling these guys were at Green Man, if not they sound like they should have been. This song is strangely beautiful and graceful in an ugly way. I like the electronic guitar noise in the middle with the hooting and howling which are reflected in the music wonderfully. It does sound raw and animalistic. His voice is a weird mixture of perfectly executed notes and just off eerie sounding ones which gives this song a feeling that stays with you long after you've listened to it.

Wild Swim- Another Night

Okay they don't even have a youtube video but these guys are brilliant. They're a set of 19 year olds (?) from Oxford who have created a wonderful sound. Again I heard about them from Ollie Russians blog (my band's better than yours) and I got hooked. He really does find some crackers. Was going to see them but the tickets had all sold out which is a shame. Next time maybe.

Friday, 4 November 2011

Just roll with it til it's all good, yeah

Fink-Perfect Darkness

They sound like Ben Howard. And it's a nice Autumn song and I like it I can imagine the sea crashing on the rocks and the leaves falling.

And Christ I know exactly what the person who said "this song screams for sex" means. It's gorgeously sensual.

Monkeys in my heart, are rattling their cages

Gary Jules-Falling Awake

Even the title of this song evokes thought! His song is ghostly and beautiful. Like there is no hope left in the world but it's okay. So relaxing. It makes me feel like everything around me is falling down and collapsing like an apocalyptic world, but there's nothing I can do about it so I may as well just relax and accept it; horrific as it is.

Obviously this doesn't happen to me on a daily basis but it does help me accept the little uncomfortable things; people being cruel, failing tests and feeling lonely. Little things that everyone experiences.

There is far too much "angry" music at the moment. The lyrics aren't offensive or angry but the music itself is. It's shouted or blasted at you and it makes me personally very uptight and anxious and almost angry at the world, maybe it's the commercial machines plan...get us to self destruct. I doubt it. But I think music like this is good for you, it makes me feel physically and mentally relaxed, although not great for writing UCAS as it makes me almost not care.

Tuesday, 1 November 2011

Well the world is only a stage, and I'm just a man

James Vincent McMorrow-We Don't Eat
This has been my driving album since I got my car a month ago and it's been on my ipod since like 2010? Anyway it's glorious and there is now a video that goes rather fittingly with what I use it for. He has a wonderful voice and comes across as a very humble and wonderful man. He has however shaven his beard off, even if it is for Movember I do not approve!
I'm not sure what it's about and neither is he as I listened to an interview where he said even if he knew he inspiration he wouldn't tell anyone what it was as it would ruin their interpretations.

The Quiet Kind-In front of you
Pretty depressing slow, nostalgic, melancholy song but I really do like it. Despite the dreadfully American sound it has. And the over over exclamation of the "ever" and "front." Nice background music for breaking up with someone?

Life in disguise-The Slip
I like the folky sound to this guys voice and the way in which the guitar compliements his voice so nicely. It's pretty chilled and relaxing. I don't have a lot to say about either of the last two and this sit in the shadow of the first, rightfully so I feel.

Though we may be too young

Ben Howard- Depth over Distance

Okay I had an amazing post made for this but my laptop crashed and lost it all. Anyway I saw Ben Howard at Scala on Wednesday and he is one of the best acts I've seen live, not for theatrics or stage presence but for the sheer amount of joy he bought to the faces and lives of the audience watching. He seemed to be having an awful amount of fun on stage (which was infectious) he did what he was there to do, give the audience one memorable performance. He has such a beautifully haunting quality about his voice, you can hear it reoccurring on you through out the night, not in a bad curry like way.

The fact he loves surfing and Bon Iver and that he is from Devon would make me love him but his dashing features, gentle approach and love for what he does makes me warm to him even more. Nature and love are two key themes in his lyrics and suggests he has a lot of love for everyone and everything, especially the sea; we have one thing in common already...I may be in with a chance. And yes I do imagine he is directly addressing me in his songs, doesn't everyone...? His band are pretty sweet as well, India and Chris, there's a real sense of mutual respect and friendship between them which is wonderful to see.
I am a little bit starstruck as I got eye contact at least twice. Pathetic, I know.
Anyway artist of the year? I think so, him or James Vincent McMorrow. It's been a good year for singer songwriters, finally.

I do want to ask him who built the water slide in his Keep your head up video, it's glorious and I WILL employ them to build me one for my 18th http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADP65wbBUpc&ob=av2e

Watching all our friends fall

Lovin for Kasabian

I love how they've chosen something totally not them to cover, could have easily chosen something a little similar to their own music, they haven't ruined this either they've changed it and given it a slightly different feeling
I like Radio ones live lounge an awful lot!

Sunday, 23 October 2011

Yeah yeah and it's okay

Foster the People-Helena Beat

This video reminds me of Lord of the Flies.

Also they were amazing at Reading, filled that little tent right up. Never been beaten up/pushed around at 1pm in my life, crazy. These guys are incredibly interesting, I'd love to meet them and try and understand what they're trying to say with their music and videos. Obviously that we live in a very messed up world but I think there's more to it than that...

Do you really think she'll pull through?

The Smiths- Girlfriend in a coma

I know this is most certainly not new! But it's incredible and I love it. Such haunting voice kind of soft whilst singing these meaningful, heavy lyrics. I don't need to explain this choice, people know if they like The Smiths or not.

Friday, 21 October 2011

You are not my competition

The Five One-Mandatory

I like the sound of this, it's an interesting blend of electric beats with 60's sounding music. It sounds like a load of different musicians just coming together and have a bit of a session and recording it at the end. The blend is smooth and fluid rather than jagged and jaunty. Tis a little bit wonderful.
Reminds me a little of K'naan-Waving Flags...towards the middle.

I've picked up my music finding past time again now, making up for summer.

Thursday, 20 October 2011

They say the world was built for two

Lana Del Rey-Video Games
I hated this song to begin with but it's grown on me even if it is a little over played, it just doesn't make me get chills and relax like some but it's still nice
Yes I was slow to get on the band wagon for this one but hey ho.

Secondly

San Cisco-Golden Revolver
This is a fun song, very summery and it's woken me up to do my biology wonderfully! I like the muted sound to his voice like his singing through a kind of gauze...I think they will do very very well, they have the happy feel people want, particularly in summer. He sounds a little like King Charles in parts when there's quick speaking/rap attempts.

I said it would be alright, but I just don't know

Oliver Tank- Last Night I Heard everything in slow motion

I love music that literally makes you stop everything you're doing and simply listen. This music made me stop completely. I just shut my eyes and breathed deeply and relaxed for 4 minutes. As Eoghan Mc Dermott said "If you want your heart to be broken and put back together in 4 minutes listen to this" It's like a more chilled, slow James Blake. Good driving music I think. It's a beautiful blend of classical sounds with electronic over tones, I can't even put into words how much I love it, it's simply blissful.
I do believe it should have more views than 9000 but still it deserves all the ones it has. I must now go and listen again.

"Hey, check out this plasma I got"

Beans on Toast-Free Night of Riots

Pretty cool that someone has put a song about the riots out there, they were terrifying times and I was all the way down in peaceful old Cornwall! But I don't like how everyone has suggested that it's all young people. Yes they were probably all young people who were there but I wasn't and the vast majority of young people weren't there being idiots. We do get dreadfully categorised and stereotyped, especially by the media. There were also younger children there around 11 who must have learnt the behaviour from someone they knew. I love Beans on Toast, have done since he toured with Frank Turner a few years ago, he speaks the truth and has an interesting whining voice, I like it.

The world is full of those tonight

Shay Bard-Torch Song

Such simple lyrics make this song wonderful for me. Here's the simple task
Save me...

And who are those he refers to? The melody and electronic worldy sound make this a keeper. The high pitched singing is also charming mixed with the low steady verse singing voice.

Best enjoyed on a warm midday in October, like today get outside and enjoy the weather (I am going now actually)

Tuesday, 11 October 2011

Hold on, hold on

Everybody Hurts-REM

Seriously un-me song today (don't get me wrong though I love REM), like ridiculously so but you know when you just need a bit of crying and need music to do it? This is my moping, selfish song that I can listen to. It does not make me cry, I'm not that soft but it's just calming and almost grounding. It just makes me think people have bigger problems than me. Yeah I'm just regurgitating what intelligent people say but how else can I put it...?
I just like the simplicity of this song and the way it just makes me calm down. I also like the length, it's perfectly long to make you realise it's playing and think. The way it almost rises to a positive ending to the song, the tune get's optimistic but it then cuts to the ambiguous ending. Both the lyrics, tune and screenplay are wonderful and marry very well together.
The real fighters honestly are the ones who go on living. Putting up with the shit day after day, living for the few and far between good experiences.

I love life, I really do I just get my self into ruts of misery born of my own bad moods which I can't get out of for a long time. Music helps.

Wednesday, 5 October 2011

And I doubt that you ever had a soul now

Mayer Hawthorne-The Walk

This guy has been around for a while with his soulful, jazzy, high pitched songs. If I haven't posted his stuff before check out his earlier stuff it's a little more "obscure." This is very easy background music but the lyrics are pretty intriguing, they're very blunt partnered with very ambiguous sounding music, almost so relaxed it has no gusto to it...very odd mix but I love it, makes for a different listen.
Enjoy,

Tuesday, 4 October 2011

All very musical

White Wishes-Hold your hand

Gone a bit out there and gone for some world music sounding stuff with this one but I like it
Not a lot to say though so make your own opinions.

Wednesday, 21 September 2011

The bus broke down

Wow. Read the lyrics.
The bus was late
And forced us all to congregate
Twenty-seven strangers
Made to stand and wait

The time went by
The sun went down
A baby cried
I just stood in line

But there is no cue
No stage hand saying what to do
And you are me
And I am you

The bus it came
And everybody loaded in
Twenty-seven strangers
In a moving can

The fluorescent light
Doubled everyone inside
The baby's face reflected
In the shopfronts in the sky

But faces change
And rules they all get rearranged
And photographs
All fade away

The bus broke down
At the graveyard on the edge of town
Twenty-seven strangers
Separate without a sound

So I walked home
Just feeling nothing on my own
Noticing that tree of yours
I've been watching it grow

So that's why I'm late
My dearest one what can I say
And tomorrow it could be the same
When I do it all again

Possibly some of the best lyrics I've heard/read in a while. Incredible. You don't know what's going on until the end and you can take what you like from it. Is the subject he is talking to dead? And she has a tree growing by her grave as a memory of her? He always comes to visit her and that is the purpose of his journey but he doesn't know the purpose of the other peoples journeys. We are all so focussed on our own lives that we don't notice everyone else going about their business, in their own little bubbles. It's ironic that we are surrounded by strangers yet we are all connected "You are me and I am you" we are intertwined yet we have such little concern for other peoples lives that we roll along next to them without noticing them. Most of the time. Such simplistic and beautifully constructed verses and lines, this verse I find magical and I don't know why "The bus it came
And everybody loaded in
Twenty-seven strangers
In a moving can"
There is no person telling us how our lives will pan out and where to go next or what line to say or when to exit from someones life, "there is no cue//No stage hand saying what to do" and I'm not sure what he's saying when he sings "But faces change
And rules they all get rearranged
And photographs
All fade away"
Is he referring to memories fading, the memories of her fading? And the faces of the people around him changing while his routine stays the same? Different people but he has the same embarrassing disregard for them? Intriguing and I can't think right now.

Ron Pope-A Drop In The Ocean

I'm not catching up on the past 15 or so days! And easy song today, good classic American love sound and I really need that right now!
I really like his voice and the lyrics and rhyme he uses. Some lines are a little excessively passionately sung but still it's making me feel a little less agitated and chilled a little.

I hate school. It's such a bitchy place and everyone seems to know everything about each other. I also thought I'd never say this but I need a hug, pretty desperately.

Monday, 5 September 2011

I would do it all the same

Big Audio Dynamite-Situation no where
If this can be classified as a song then it is one of the most entertaining I have heard in a long time! It's so so so entertaining which, essentially, is what music should be. It is a little like a combination of noises that don't quite fit together but somehow work in a strange way but hey who's complaining? Well thank you mother for introducing me to this weird marriage of sounds that has been passed of as a wonderful song. Also the guy who says "Rhythm and Melody" sounds like a spitting image of beardyman in his kitchen antics video, check it outttt.

We can't lose now

Nizlopi-Start Beginning

These guys form one of the most beautiful bands ever. It's a real shame they split up I don't think fame suited them and probably scared them. They write such beautiful and true lyrics. They explained the lyrics before they performed them on one recording and it's about doing what you love NOW and not letting anyone get in your way, similar message to JCB if you think about it. I wonder what these lovely people are doing now? Other projects or working in production and song writing? Who knows, but it is a real shame they're not making music under the Nizlopi name any more.

It's anybody's guess

Reading took it out of me so I can't do too many songs today maybe 1 or two when I feel up to it, here is 1

Dry the River-New Ceremony
These guys are amazing and put on a proper good show at Reading. They are adorable and are holding a secret party in London soon which I hope to be a part of, desperately. Anyway they're mellow but they have got a bit of a strange tone to their folky music which makes it interesting to the normal stuff. I like the way each verse almost rises and falls, it gets optimistic and then very pessimistic very quickly.

Yes my writing is getting significantly and noticeably worse as time passes. I think my mind is deteriorating but I just have nothing else to say.

Collaboration

Strange one tonight.
James Blake and Bon Iver
Since James Blake burst onto the scene early this year with limit to your love (remix of feists song) he has gone a little quiet until he collaborates with Bon Iver to produce Fall Boys Creek Choir, madness. I love these two the perfect combination of psychedelic, airy music with street dubstep sounds. Perfect, they have executed it wonderfully and I just listened on BBC Radio 1 but imagine a combination of this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOT2-OTebx0 (so, so, so fresh and new sounding, I love it, especially the bit where there's no music just his voice cutting through)
with this
and this is what you get (apparently)

Very classy. Sounds like they're using one of those wooden tube things you hit with a wooden beater in Primary school at 0.21 ahah. Glockenspiel? Maybe.

Guts for garters

James Vincent McMorrow- We don't eat
I am in love with this mans voice. So so so inspiring and beautiful. You can hear the emotion bursting through every word, it's almost painful to listen to but he saves it just in time to make it simply stunning. He sounds so chilled like he's sat alone somewhere singing for his own pleasure and to keep his own company. These are the types of people who make the world go round and keep my faith in humanity alive; they keep my faith that not everyone is a sell out and people still have morals. Charming man, he has hints of James Morrison but he's better in my opinion. I don't really like the increase in pace of this song it ruins the subtly of his voice but he regains it towards the end and rounds the song of wonderfully.
Cool remix too which is on the vinyl ahah, that is the sign of a proper artist who appreciates others work http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItlJjXpHPKA

Dry the River-Night Owls
As Reading is this weekend and my excitement is building I thought I'd give a small band who don't fit with the traditional Reading sound a bit of a review. These guys are adorable and actually, in my opinion very good and I think they will be pretty big on the acoustic indie scene in the coming years. There is a real tenderness to their music which makes it sound very genuine. As they're relatively unknown I hope to be right at the front at 3pm on Friday at the Festival Republic Stage, may get a cheeky wink in there if I'm feeling up to it! Any way I love this song and they have a lovely sound and feeling to their songs.

We are chained to the day

King Charles-Early thoughts of Final Days
This guy is quirky and fun. And he has wonderful hair and an interesting voice with which he attempts to rap and strangely succeeds in a strange way that shouldn't work but does. I love him and he's got wonderful lyrics which I try to listen to but they get a little mumbled in the music. Anyway he's different and speaks the straight forward truth with no gimics and fakery. He looks like some rock God then sings like he does, like a high class political activist, his pronunciation is wonderful. Like a charming and gentlemanly Itch (The King Blues) The video is strange and as some one has commented, can be a little awkward to watch but heyho.

"Find me a rich man who doesn't want more!"

The thrill of the chase and all that.

Why is it whenever I discover a sick new band they split up/have split up. Thanks to Last FM I heard these guys about 3 months ago and proceeded to discover they had split up. Sad times. The main singer is now working on a new project (www.bearsdenmusic.co.uk) which is interesting. They remind me of a more vocally gifted Bright Eyes. I really do love their music and so I shall do two songs of theirs and another in this post, ooh spoiling myself.
Never love again-more upbeat and racy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53RmxAbRzQo
Let yourself love (I need to do this, more in the other blog soon) - calmer and deeper http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cs7DkxT0JZc&feature=related

"It's just another dream, just another nightmare. Except you forgot to close your eyes""

And now Mystery Jets. This song is how I feel right now. Young love is ridiculous I know but at the time it feels like the only thing in the world. Like you've never felt so happy but you know it's because you will never see that person again that is keeping the memory of them so happy? The chase and the feeling that you will never be satisfied and be with them is thrilling is a little distressing and it's this feeling we (I) really like, if painful at times. Like the anticipation of an event is better than the event itself and the feeling of chasing something you can't have is the best part. Sad but true, I'm always out for new experiences and not get stagnant and boring.

What a colourful day

Alan Pownall- Colourful Day

This is a glorious song as well. Could be overly up beat and cringe worthy but Pownall executes it perfectly, with his melancholy voice and depressed sound making the perfect soundtrack to my moping I love it. He sounds like a better Charlie Simpson, consider it for a minute.

It's all in my mind now, but I can't help thinking why it's oh so quiet.
Curious

Give her right of way

Joshua Radin- Winter
This guy is wonderful. Except he cancelled on Goldcoast last year which is possibly the deepest thing you could do to such a lovely group of festival organisers. They booked him early before he got famous and then when he had a hit his management booked him for lots of gigs in America and he couldn't make Goldcoast, pretty lame if you ask me. But he has a gorgeous voice, it's very delicate and fits the song perfectly. Also the lyrics are something I can relate to quite well right now!
Seth Lakeman- White Hare
Now this guy is on a par with the singer from Gaslight Anthem in the best, gruffest, most manly yet still soft and caring voice contest. They are both spectacular. He has a certain rustic manly rugged noise behind his endearing lyrics and caring country sound. Very peculiar. He also looks like he could knock me out in one punch which is always a positive ahah. Beautiful human being with a wonderful voice. Horriffic video though. Do not watch it, it may ruin it.
okay changed the link the video is still not nice! But apparently live he is amazing so I shall put that on my to do list. And the fact his name is Seth is just awesome.

It's cold, fast and confusing

Siiick song today.
Beans on Toast-Things to do before you're thirty
Since Beans on Toast supported Frank Turner on a tour in 2008/2009? I've been fascinated by him. In the way in which Frank Turner shouts his political views at you in a wonderful yet imposing way Beans on Toast almost wafts them towards you, allowing you to pluck them out of the air should you wish to listen or even agree. He just seems really relaxed in what he does and the undiscovered, dirty life seems to suit him well. I imagine he's the sort of person who just drifts through life making lots of friends and blagging sofa spaces off them to sleep on. He's the guy who at school you thought "how on earth will he make it through life?" but he's the annoying one who does nothing and still has a better life than you...git. But yeah he's wonderful and his melodic wanderings are lovely to listen to and great to relax to. It's almost political music for people who couldn't give a toss about anything. Like me.
Unfortunately it's not on youtube (boo) but it is on soundcloud I think so seriously listen, it's not that hard to listen to in all honesty you could have it on in the background whilst doing the crossword but you may get distracted, apologies.

Radio XFM

The Temper Trap-Sweet Disposition
Heard this in the car today on the radio and decided it was a very strange and interesting song. It's odd in that it has appealed to so many people despite the fact it is not an especially pop sounding song but also in the way in which it progresses. Not only in pitch and notes from an alarmingly high noise to a mellow more tuneful sound but in the way the tempo develops and the drum beat drops and becomes more prominent. Bit of a breakthrough for pop music here, the lyrics are also wonderfully complex and meaningful if you think about them, yet also universal and not difficult to relate to. Really a feat of music, congratulations Temper Trap. Now hurry up and produce us some more.

Sunday Song

Sunday 14th August

Gay for Johnny Depp- Shh, put the shiv to my throat
How interesting. These guys have got a very strange sound that is not worthy of a Sunday listening session but I like it. When I'm angry I will listen to them again. They emit very odd noises in a kind of charming sequence haha not good for 6.30 on a Sunday though so today I shall do two songs.

Gomez- Bubblegum years
This as Sam Duckworth has reminded me is a wonderful Sunday song. So relaxing and peaceful. I can envisage myself on a beach in the evening with a fire and the sun going down behind a rock with the person I love (...) or a group of friends. Or simply driving in the rapidly vanishing light to an unknown destination with no cares. Ahh so lovely, what a chilled voice singing some complex lyrics in such a relaxed way. What are bubblegum years?

And I'm already f*****g wasted

Alright August isn't a great month, too many holidays. (Not that I'm complaining)
However Saturday 13th August
Stromae/Vato Gonzalez-Alors on danse
Strange song this one. The original is amazing in French as the sound carries through and the rhythm rather than the lyrics which is strange for me. But the English version is just hilarious. The original is about genuine issues (well I say genuine mainly moaning about work but yeah genuine) and the English one, rather appropriately as it was played so much in Malia, is about waking up in the morning still drunk/savagely hungover. Such a fun song and just a laugh really. His voice is also very blunt and so half hearted that you can't help but like it I think. Reminds me of such incredible nights and I keep remembering more and more and laughing to myself about it!

Saxobeat

Mr Saxobeat-Alexandra Stan

This song must have been played about 15 times a night in Malia. Such a club anthem and not much else. According to one of my friends it's "such a classic summer song...."whatever but I do quite like it. Her voice is interesting a little deeper than a lot of female pop artists. Very very very easy to dance to and even I could do it, with a little intoxicating help. She's also very hot which makes me think I look like her when I'm dancing to this song....haha I wish! And the video is a little demeaning but I like to think it show's the way mens sexuality blurs their logic and the effect women can have over ignorant men. Quite empowering if you look at it that way....I also like the voice of whoever does the "mm yeah" I think it's a guy. Anyway OO AH MALIA!

What have we have become?

Sunday 7th August

I'm allowing the days I was on holiday. Too long. However here is a song for today. I have been all pop songed out from Malia and from hearing the same song at least 10 times a night so I've found some mellow kind of stuff to recover to.

Cary Brothers-Alien
Literally just found this so it won't be an in depth review but there are some quite clever lyrical references amoungst the obvious bland references about breaking peoples hearts and not meaning to. This is very very easy to listen to and exactly what I need right now. The lyrics are pretty basic and simple and the beat is slow and unchallenging. It's making me feel pretty chilled actually. There is some variation around 3 minutes actually it gets a little quicker, snazzy.

Paper Tigers

1. Plain White T's- Rhythm of love
This is proof bland mainstream music can progress into something a little better. This literally is the epitome of summer in a song for me. It was released in like September last year and I love it. The warm weather yesterday made it really feel like summer and I cannot wait to get down to Cornwall and surf. That is all. This is a really basic song that is to put it bluntly nice. better than their old stuff anyway. I like it and it sums up summer living for me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWiwuiT58Yc&ob=av2e

2. Paper Tigers - Perth (Bon Iver cover)
Ahh dubstep. Usually ruins these sorts of songs with it's heavy, unforgiving beats but it rather compliments this song. I checked out his other stuff and it's pretty good as well. Really enhances the song. Of course the original is wonderful but this is a different take on it. It makes me feel very druggy and trance like. I'm going to be checking out lots more dubstep trance like things in the near future but watch this space...This is definitely one of the better artists in my opinion and keeps the authenticity and original intent of the song whilst making it exciting and refreshed.

Dream a lil dream of me

1. Razorlight-In the morning
I love this band. I can seldom tell the difference between them and Manic Street Preachers...they're both good though so I can't complain. They were at Guilfest this weekend and it would have been an amazing opportunity to see them at a pretty tiny festival. They're one of those classic bands that everyone knows but no one has their album...Like the classic books people talk about but haven't actually read...anyway this is a really good song so take the time to listen to ittttt.

2. Chapel Club-Surfacing
These guys are sick! I thought they'd have load more views than this! Crazy. Anyway they're at Reading really early in the day so going to have to start drinking pretty darn early I think. Anyway I like this song. They heavy dense drum beats behind the dull but lovely voice is almost compelling to listen to. Lyrics are pretty cool too, remind me of a more mellow Vaccines.

Banter

3 songs 19th-21st July

1. Guillemots-Falling out of reach
I like the slight progression in this song. It amuses me as it starts very mellow like a sad slow song and builds into something quite interesting. I really do like guillemots they always give away free stuff on their twitter and Fyfe Dangerfield seems like a really nice guy. Genuine but with a bit of a backbone. He has also done some really nice solo stuff recently which I like a lot. His cover of "She's always a woman" was used in a Waitrose advert and I think I prefer it to the original. Funny little video though. But yeah Fyfe has such a mellow voice that is so wonderful to listen to and pretty much touches your heart (yes I did just say that...) but perfect for a boring wet afternoon.

2. Josh Rouse- Car Crash
I'm not sure where I first heard Josh Rouse but Frank Turners twitter recently brought it to my attention again and I can't stop listening. This is my favourite song to cycle to as it reflects my local area so well. People literally milling around doing nothing on the village green for hours walking dogs and going to the pub. Maybe down to the river. The perfect long summers day. But back to this smooth lyricist. I can imagine he is a very smooth talker, perfectly articulate with words and knows just how much to say. The vulnerable edge to his voice is almost mesmerising so congratulations Mr Rouse.

3. The Wombats-Techno Fan
Now, these guys are apparently amazing live and I am yet to see them. They're so upbeat and happy all the time, even when singing depressing music it still manages to sound happy. They've been around for a while but their cheeky chappy ways are having a winning effect on the pop/rock/indie population of London and the UK. They are like a bunch of Jack the lads up for a good time and not taking themselves too seriously light hearted banter is what I would expect a lot of on a night out with them. Perfect.

Fraying

Monday 18th July

The Fray-How to Save a life
I like this song. It's very poppy and not very original but I love it. It makes me think even though it doesn't really say a lot itself. This songs always used to come on after The View-Same Jeans so I always link these two songs. I like his voice so so so much, it's got a calm kind of gruffness to it which is just beautiful. You can hear the passion coming through the song which makes up for it being very popesque. Enjoy if you haven't heard it before, I think they're American but they sound very British but I'm not sure what they're doing now they did have a few very lovely little hits in the day from 2002. Wow 15 million views, crazy. Didn't know it was that popular! Good for them.

Ignore

Ignore the last shit song from 2 minutes ago this is much better
Steve Appleton-Roots
He was single of the week by itunes a few years ago and now he's got new stuff and I really do quite like it. I'd forgotten about him until I was trawling myspace, he's one of the artists I listen to but don't quite clock on my ipod. A kind of like the song feeling but not enough to look up the name of it...even though I know it. But if he continues it should be quite exciting
And wow this is an incredible cover, I am actually falling a little in love with this guy again. Prefer this to the original as well, it's softer.

Finally see what it means to be living.

Bad Choice

Sunday 27th July

2 songs I have a good idea of what one will be the other I'm not sure yet..

1. Youngblood Hawke-Rootless
New project from the guys from Iglu and Hartly, so of course I will love it. In this City is my favourite song of all time, not joking and so of course I'm going to love this one. 242 views, I feel very special and privileged, I started following these guys on twitter I think because they started following me...I'm not sure I can't remember but I do like this new song of theirs. It's very consistent and some may say boring but I really do like songs that keep something that works going....they have a concept that works and they don't mess with it. I like the line "I'm feeling groovy" hahaa wonderful. BBQ listening, man I would love to have a pool party with these guys, would be sick! I imagine they're so much fun. Enjoy on a summers day at about 3.

2. Futures-Sal Paradise
I found this song when I was actually searching for the band "Sal Paradise" who appear to have fallen off the edge of the Earth and have no music left anywhere on the internet, their loss the viral music industry is moving and evolving faster than ever; look at Ed Sheeran...Anyway I recognise these guys and I don't know why...hmm interesting never mind I'm not even too keen on their music but the singer has that kind of indie pop look so I guess they're going to do well. It's quite bland but easy to have on in the background I guess, doesn't really grab your attention! Well I needed to fill a space and got caught on this video, I'm sorry but it may be worth a listen if it's your sort of thing

She's Got You High

Friday 15th July
I'm getting quite consistent...that could sound so strange depending on how your mind works.

Mumma Ra-She's Got You High
Now reading the comments underneath just shows how little intuition people use when looking for new music now a days. It had to come from films, adverts or TV programs for them to listen to it. You'll never see someone comment "The Times newspaper brought me here" or "I read an online blog about this band and thought I'd check them out." We really do rely on the media to tell us what to listen to. Saying that I'm glad waitrose used this song in their advert as it really fits very well. The uplifting lightness of summer and the free feeling that comes with the summer holidays and long evenings. I first heard this song on a CD we had in the car and the advert bought it to my attention again I don't know when this song was released but it must have been 3 years ago I was listening to it, maybe even longer when I didn't know exactly what high meant. I had the innocent view it meant happy which is partly true I suppose. But yes a very lovely but potentially irritating song there. I quite like it though, funny little video too.

Yes, a repeat band but I like it

Thursday 12th July
1. Bastille- Laura Palmer
Now I know I've posted this guys stuff before (the song flaws oooh this is exciting new video on a boat looks like a lot of fun http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXF-CSlpyxQ) but he really does amaze me. I'm dissapointed I hadn't heard this before a few months ago as it is truly wonderful and summery. The kind of electronic sound doesn't ruin the raw edge to his voice. Purely wonderful one of the top artists of my year up there with Ben Howard for sure. Very different sounds though. I am broadening my horizons slightly...still relatively acousticy. I really cannot wait for this guy to release an album I will be using my itunes voucher for that, really new not so groundbreaking but refreshing and uplifting sound for summer. This make me happy to put it simply.

I sound like a 5 year old, I really need to expand my vocabulary!

Goldheart Assembly

Oooh I'll add this one for tomorrow as I doubt I'll get round to doing it, these guys were sick at Reading last year there was no one watching so I got right to the front and it was like 11.30 and they were going thanks for getting up early to come and watch us...crazy hahaa bless I really did enjoy their set in the NME tent on that warm lonely morning. Infact Reading was pretty lonely full stop for me haha I just wandered watching sick bands all day and night then staggered back to my tent. Brilliant weekend for me. Anyway here they are Goldheart Assembly-King of Rome

Vein

5 songs. I'm going to start with one that's pretty close to me and means a lot.

1. Whitley-More than Life
This was a free single on itunes years ago! And it really is what sparked my interest in different music. This guy has since stopped producing music but he was an Australian artist with a very strange voice that seemed to hang beautifully in the air when I listened to him. Even through my headphones, a kind of pleasant ringing that I wanted to be there. It's such a shame that talent like this goes to waste but I have hope he will begin performing again soon and perhaps come to England he seems like an absolute lad and a genuinely nice guy. Now to see if he comes up in youtube (people often get him confused with "Wiley" whoever that guy is...) Yes! Result, enjoy enjoy it truly is a treat for sore ears.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-6nn_v_zwM and yes it sounds like this on the proper recording kind of retro and crackling. (P.S reading the comments just enhances my point that he seems like a top guy)

2 (and 3). Jose Gonzalez- Heartbeats
I remember my mum had a CD in her car and I can't remember the title but it was a like compilation disc and this was the song we always skipped to on it, number 18 I think. It's so wonderfully put together the flow through the chords and the words is magical. Gonzalez is an extremely talented young man. This is very different to the original much more acoustic and mellow and chilled, music to get stoned to I would assume...It is interesting when covers over popularise the originals a great shame in a way as this is not how the song was written to be played, it was written to have a much more up beat get on ya feet and dance feel about it. At least Jose completely changed it to something the opposite end of the scale to the original and I believe it works a lot better. In the original the womans voice irritates me intensely, nice backing beats though.

4. 6 Day Riot-Run for your life
These kids are so cute. Saw them at Green Man and they're bubbly and lively and adorable. She has a sickly sweet voice that I would normally despise but for some reason I can put up with it here. Perhaps because of the lyrics she's singing and the backing music. The drum behind gives a tribal feeling to a British band and a kind of animalistic quality to her voice comes out (for me anyway. These kids is a pretty good song also.

5. Beach House- Zebra
Following in the same vane/vein? (my brain has disintegrated so badly!) these guys were at Green Man too on the Pub stage or whatever literally no bigger than 4m by 4m and they were playing to a pretty whacked out crowd in the midday sun. Now they have 233,000 or so views and are growing in popularity all the time. Good for them! Nice to see some real talent coming through. Not my usual sort of thing, a bit psychedelic for me I think but pleasant all the same, I like the layering they use on the track and it grows in the first minute or so into something quite interesting. Perfect background music but well worth a good 5 or so listens and then it can make driving music drawer. I do rather enjoy it though, it's growing on me.

From Summer to Winter...

....both of which turned out to be a bit of a let down as you will see below...

1. Team Waterpolo-So Called Summer
I do believe this song got me through summer 2009. There was so much rain it was ridiculous, didn't feel like summer once so I just listened to this pretty much on repeat to remind myself it wasn't just me and to not go stir crazy over the lack of sun. I'm so sad this band have split up I really do think they had great prospects and had a good following of people who supported what they did. I hate it when this happens to bands, it's so sad for both them and the fans. We no longer get to hear their brilliant music and they no longer get to do what they appeared to enjoy. Anyway thanks to Myspace and Youtube they are immortalised, until the worldwideweb crashes and dies at least. Hahaa 29 views, how very depressing indeed.

2. Hyde and Beast- The trees are falling down
There is no evidence of these guys on youtube which is a shame but as they're brand spanking new I suppose it's fair enough. I actually found these guys thanks to this blog http://mybandsbetterthanyourband.wordpress.com/ so you can go on there and scroll down almost to the bottom and listen to the band, I would recommend it. Not only the song but the whole blog it's pretty special. Anyway this is like a freaky kind of trip music left over from the seventies. It's very strange yet slightly mesmerising at the same time. Crazy, but well worth a listen and a little of your time.

3. Hurts-All I want for Christmas is New Years Day
So unseasonal but I love this song. Such a simplistic tune on the surface which is easy to follow and really refreshing in such a crowded music scene. Some may say it's depressing but I think it's just looking to the future and ignoring the christian celebration we all get so obsessed with and looks to the facts about life that a new year is coming and we have plenty to look forward to. Love to Hurts for this tune, got me through the lovely Christmas period...

Pathetic love songs here we go

4 songs for today
I was quite lucky I had to visit Newcastle University which gave me two wonderfully long car journeys to listen to some music and decide what to review or recommend next.
I was in a rather self indulgent I want to be loved kind of mood so these are pretty much all soppy love type songs, sorry this is the only time it will ever happen.
1. Melee- Built to last
This is one of those songs that I never get bored of listening to. There are very few but this is a calm nice song of which I don't have a lot to say as it doesn't really go anywhere. Very very easy listening and it's a shame they haven't done anything else noticeable since this song. It may have been the adorable video that made me like this song actually, a sort of accomplished better version of scouting for girls.

2. Death Cab for Cutie-I will follow you into the dark
Definitely their most heartfelt and meaningful song and despite the accent it really sounds like they could mean it..? Well if someone like Newton Faulkner covered it it may sound a little more genuine but it is a very beautiful song. The simplicity of the video adds to it's beauty. It makes you listen to the lyrics which, essentially, is what a song should be about surely. Clever in places yet blindingly obvious and wonderfully simplistic in places this song is a keeper. The voice is lovely too and soft gruffness to it that is so delicious.

3. Newton Faulkner-I took it out on you
This man is perhaps the most wonderful man to have ever lived...I can't think of a nicer guy! And this will not be the last you hear of him on here however this is to begin as it follows the theme and its a lovely summer day right now. I can't imagine Faulkner getting angry and perhaps shouting at someone he loves, or anyone for that matter. He seems to perfect but this perhaps adds another human dimension to his music. I shant dwell as I may exhaust everything in an unsatisfactory manner which would make me angry with myself.

4. The Script-The man who can't be moved
Such an overplayed song but yet so brilliant. I am going very very mainstream today which upsets me a little as I was aiming to bring new music....I will do when I can think straight. I love songs that as soon as you hear those first chords and notes transport you back. This song does that to one place and time in particular-the docks in St Ives 2 years ago when this song was in the charts and on the radio 24/7 (?) and a particular bench on a particular evening where some boys were smashing cans on their heads and looking for our approval-it was ridiculously amusing. This is a beautiful song and I'm glad it's got 20 million + views, they are well deserved. Apparently they still do an amazing live show and are extremely humble and nice to interview, I'm glad of it else my dream may be shattered should I find out they were arrogant and lazy. Ahhh Cornwall how I miss thee and the Irish accent how I love it. Good memories.

Probably going to go more depressing tomorrow, everyone loves it really....

Thursday, 30 June 2011

27th-30th June

I'm going to have to look at the classic emo/rock/pop bands tonight. Massive cringe and to spark things off...

1. Good Charlotte-Girls & Boys
Such a standard song from my childhood. I would have been 8 when this came into being and at that vulnerable impressionable age and must have been seriously swayed by my friends into listening to this song. It's obviously had an impact as it has been ringing in my head all day. Crazy.

2. Wheatus- Teenage Dirtbag
Not even joking this is probably the most classic song of my generation. Possibly the soundtrack to my generation in more ways than one; not only did we grow up with it but we sit around and do nothing all day. Literally so it's very fitting. I love it though, so American and so shit but kind of addictive like horrible sickly strawberry sweets that you keep taking another of despite their vile taste? You can't hate this song though it's too harmless and downright fun! Plus he has an awesome hat so is already a "winner."

3. My Chemical Romance-Welome to the Black Parade
I do believe this horrific song haunted my childhood. I hated it. It's depressing, satanical sound and unnecessarily strange lyrics. I still hate it little has changed so seriously, if you have any self worth or enjoy being remotely happy do not listen to this song. I have however included a link in case you like it...they're new stuff is more poppy and perhaps no better but I am looking forward to the bottling they're going to recieve at Reading this year. The video is like some failed copy of the nightmare before Christmas.

There we are a little early 2000's time warp. Little mix of the good and the not so good childhood influences I recieved from the wonderful music industry we have now. I do hope you enjoyed 2/3 of that.

So hot

So 2 from the 23rd plus the 23rd-27th....booohooo 6 for today and I'm running low on motivation in this heat!
So Monday 27th June we have lift off...

Now the initial aim behind this blog was to bring to light some underground slightly less well known music but it has turned into a free for all platform on which my sporadic brain has begun to spew anything it likes. This is how I shall continue as it's easier, but first some new undiscovered (he's actually recently been signed but shhhh) music

1. Adam Barnes- Supermarket
This video is wonderful. I love the sneaky way in which this guys friends slide him his guitar and he hurriedly puts it over his head and begins to play. Such respect for them as it makes a brilliantly entertaining video to accompany a lovely song. Definitely going to see this guy in Wycombe on the 7th (?) on my own if I have to! Even without the video his voice and skills come through but with the video you realise he's playing and singing whilst walking and avoiding miserable supermarket assistants. This has a spooky similarity to Seth Lakemans music though, even the pitch and tone of Barnes' voice is the same. Strange stuff, but wonderful chilled summer music. I think in the winter I will find some more depressing slow stuff but while the suns out I'll stick to this.

2. American Trash
This sounds like 303H! (or whatever their name is) but I have decided is a lot better, again, the video contributes to this admiration and liking a lot. I think it's extremely clever and the captions are an excellent way to get their point across without clogging up precious lyric space with words that don't quite work together. Anyway altogether a very listenable to song (for about 5 minutes, then for my ears it gets a little grating)

3. Rage Against the Machine- Killing in the name
Yes it was good when it was released but even better when it ruined the charts a few christmas' ago! So satisfying to see the industry is not completely monopolised by psychos (see what I did there, ey clever...or sad I'm not sure) And it restored a little faith in humanity, primarily in the youth of Britain but still gave me the anarchistical kick I need just before Christmas!

4. Benjamin Taylor-Wicked Way
Now this is a very strange song. I'll forewarn you of that. I love it though; brutally honest and truthful and brings to light what a lot of men want. Of course not all but at least it's a man singing about it very bluntly. The video is mesmerising and incredibly well thought out and put together. The director is a genius. This is definitely my favourite song in a long time and I downloaded it in December last year and still love it. If you took the words away and just listened to the tune and music it sounds like a Jason Mraz esque type of song with uplifting summery lyrics but then with the lyrics you see how raw and crashing it really is. The contrast is probably what draws me to this song every time. To put it simply I love it.

5. Chuck Ragan-For broken ears
Such a gruff voice that suits these lyrics so well. I can't really say very much about this song. It's very millitant and the use of the harmonica is genius. It evokes a feeling in me that wants to go out and fight to change the world. It's strange it's not a soft voice yet so listenable and charming. Creates the picture of a rugged, tall, handsome stranger somehow. Perhaps with walking boots walking the coastal path in late August. It is very end of summery this song so I shant dwell. I should analyse more as it's a brilliant song with wonderful lyrics but my brain refuses to work at the moment so I'll simply listen and not think.

6. The miserable Rich- Boat Song
I can't find a decent recording of this song but the introductory Brahms lullaby should be indicative of the content of the song. I believe it's dedicated to the leads mother and is a kind of promise of protection. A promise to look after her as she did he when he was young. This is one of the most adorable songs ever written. To tell your mother not to worry, that you'll always be there for her is something everyone tries to articulate but few manage it so beautifully as this band. The childhood experiences he refers to are easy for most to relate to as well as they are memories that become engrained; being sung to sleep, having a pack lunch made for you, having fairy tales read to you all these wonderful childhood things which people forget you also need when you're grown up too. Too beautiful this song and it's a shame there aren't any very good quality recordings of it. I have one on my ipod though so I'm smug. I'm glad I finished on such a touching and personal song. Enjoy this one if you didn't any of the others please, it deserves some recognition and love.

I miss Oceanfest terribly!

Wow 13th-22nd without a post, to be fair I've been at a festival for 3 days and couldn't do one the night before that but I shall make up for it now, oh no 10 songs to find and review. I won't make them my favourites as I'll save them for summer and when I have more time to do them justice. I am working on an essay on Nick Drake though which I shall post when it's finished; it's a very in depth analysis though so may take some time!

1. Beardyman- kitchen diaries
Not strictly a song I suppose however this guy is insanely talented and really innovative and fresh. He's bringing the art of beatboxing to the masses and bringing this strange vocal art form to the front of peoples minds. It's also incredibly entertaining and enjoyable to watch, and frequently I find myself watching with my mouth open and a slight laugh of amazement sneaks out. Brilliant.

2. Charlee Drew- Run Away
This guy is so easy to listen to and he's got a kind of street edge to his soft voice which is exciting. He also seems to genuinely mean all the lyrics he's singing which of course makes the sound significantly better. I love the rawness of this song and Charlee's voice aswell (Shame about the odd way he spells his name...maybe there are too many Charlie Drews?) I've known about this guy for about 3/4 years since my friend friended him on fb and I thought I'd follow the lead and I'm glad I did he's ridiculously talented so good luck to him.

3. Example-Changed the way you kissed me
I think it's this mans brilliantly odd voice that makes me love him. Or perhaps his hilarious twitter posts but I have fallen for his gruff voice since he released his first less hip hop song last year (?) I was listening to an interview he gave on Radio one and he was saying how he was still in his "smoking robe" at 1 in the afternoon and something about being in a house with lots of other people I don't really remember, oh and he went to have singing lessons but they said they would ruin his unique voice if they coached him so he didn't ahah what a lucky escape. He has gone from strength to strength and even though he is an arrogant prick he is the sort of person I would love to marry, he takes sarcasm in the same horrible light as me and doesn't care what people think. He just seems to be here to have a good time and be mean about people. Classic me right there!

4. King Blues- Boulder
So much respect for these guys right now. Saw them at the weekend at Goldcoast Oceanfest and even though they have a brand new album out they played all of their old stuff, which is exactly what the crowd wanted to hear. They were also ridiculously humble saying they expected about 6 people to turn up to watch them, I guess anarchy isn't huge in Devon, and seemed genuinely honoured that so many people had come down to watch them. We even got a picture with Jamie and Itch from the band and a autograph from Itch which they were more than willing to do. So much love for their anarchist-ical (?) lyrics and ways right now it's unreal. They are incredible live, so much energy that infects everyone in the crowd. They all seem to genuinely enjoy being on stage and love the crowds reaction. Their military, political chants are mixed in with heartfelt warming songs that you can't help but relax to. Itch also has an amazingly cute dog and a wonderfully odd voice ( I seem to have a thing for weird voices tonight)

Eugh less than half way through oooh nooo!

5. Athlete-Wires
I really do have a knack for being drawn to really depressing songs about death or distress. Not that I'm complaining as they're usually the most heartfelt ones with the best lyrics they just put me on a bit of a low mood for a while. Athlete are the perfect example of a depressing British band who produce captivating music. This song ends slightly more positively but the negative feeling throughout the song is lingering and almost haunting. I miss Athlete I wonder what they're doing now.

5. A fine frenzy- Bird of summer
Not my usual music as it's far too girly and loving but not desperate and reliant so I can cope. At least she doesn't seem to mind if he doesn't come back at all, she won't fall apart without him and she can let him go. Better summer love song than that ghastly Grease one! She has a nice calm solid voice that's very summery and uplifting, which is good as I need it after Athlete's depressing intervention in my life!

6. Iron and wine- Flightless bird
Ruined by the bands use on the Twilight films this is still a beautiful song with a beautiful voice to go with it. Such peaceful listening yet very thought provoking and deep. The deep, heavy sort of sound is wonderfully refreshing after the high pitched, ear piercing sounds everyone seems to be in to at the moment. The flowing voice is relaxed and seems to come easy to the vocalist. Such effortless talent is rare and should be appreciated.

7. Backbeat Soundsystem-Procrastination Station
These guys are so siiiiick! So chilled and lovely! Can't get enough of them right now after their smashing set at Goldcoast. The lead singers dreads were amazing, I literally couldn't take my eyes of them, captivating. They certainly did bring the reggae to Devon on that rainy day and I'm thankful for it. So easy to dance to and it has instantly lifted my mood. I love how many members there are in the band and they all evidently bring different elements to the sound; it works brilliantly! These guys seem like genuine gentlemen and lovely people and I can't wait to see them live again for some good ol' "skanking"-yes they introduced this interesting word to my vocabulary! This song also has wonderful crowd encouraging lyrics!

8. Johnny Flynn- The Box
Ahh this guy is adorable and his work is wonderfully simple. I'm getting a little bored of typing so this will be the last song tonight I'll finish tomorrow. The video's pretty cool as well and the fast beat and interesting tempo he has in his lyrics provide for interesting listening. They lyrics are clever as well all about a tramp but I feel it's also a plea for how Flynn wouldn't mind living himself-quite, simple, not confronted just peaceful. Would be nice eh?

Tired now, too much typing so 3 tomorrow-done.

ahem

I'm getting quite lazy with this now but as long as I do it every now and then I should be able to keep up. I have a few songs I want to review but a few artists who need a little more time and attention than I have to give at this time.

1. Twin Atlantic- Lightspeed
Jesus! These guys have got a lot more views since I watched this last! First heard Twin Atlantic on Zane Lowe's show what must have been about 2 years ago now and I was instantly hooked. I think it was the accents. After following their movements for a while they are now playing Reading festival on the festival republic stage and are apparently incredible live so I'm in for a treat. It's a bit heavier than my usual stuff but has a catchy drum beat which I like ahha. I also like his jeans in this video.

2. Pulp-Common People
Ahh Pulp the godfather of festival music. Mellow yet enrapturing. XFM said today that whoever is going to Reading and Leeds is in for a treat as Pulp put on an incredible set at Isle of Wight. Saw Jarvis Cocker at Green Man a few years ago and he just captivated the audience and held their attention. Interacted and threw sweets at fully grown adults. It was wonderful. So back to the music, it must be good as my mum likes it and it's stood the test of time. FACT.

3. Stornoway-Zorbing
Wow these guys have grown too, again Green Man (they seem to churn out some quality music before it's hit the masses!) and at underage where they were cracking some wonderful stories about strange arrests.....They have been labelled the most intelligent band ever as all four went ot oxford university to study at some level. They're also incredibly shy and modest and just simply adorable! I'm glad they've made some progress as they definitely deserve it. The lyrics to some of their songs are wonderfully crafted and put to music expertly but as someone commented on the video "this ladies and gentlemen is what happiness sounds like." And I completely agree so uplifting and joyous like all of their songs. This is one song I don't want to listen to too much incase I cause it to bore me and I begin to dislike it. God forbid that day comes. (Fuel Up is my favourite song by them)

I will tackle Frank Turner, Nick Drake ( who I'm doing some English coursework on) and Damien Rice at some other time when I have plentiful time to spend on them. Perhaps in the summer holidays midst constructing a bed, learning to skateboard properly and going on numerous bike rides.
